Good food and great company made for a successful staff picnic

Each and every day, staff members of the Richmond SPCA work hard to save the lives of homless animals. While we get to enjoy each other's company during this time, we set aside one day each year when we can get together to have lots of fun, friendly competition and food! This year our Sunday Fun Day Picnic was no exception as you can see by the photos below.

Gee is a good sport after being eliminated from musical chairs.

Muscial chairs quickly became competitive as it dwindled to only two competitors.

Chris was victorious and Aaron was a good sport about earning the second place title.

Limbo was a close call!

...but Gerry's moves made him the winner. This is Gerry with his winning trophy.

Barclay earns the title of having the only homerun in kickball.

The last leg of the relay race made for the perfect ending!

Staff participates in field day fun

Throw a hula hooping contest, relay races, a good ol’ fashioned game of tug-o-war, and some trivia together with our amazing staff, and you have the ingredients for a great party. I can’t remember a time when I had more fun or laughed more uncontrollably than at our staff field day Sunday night at our Chief of Education and Training Sarah Babcock’s nearby farm.

One of the highlights of the event for me (and for most everyone in attendance) was when Timothy Joyner, our manager of volunteers and programs, and Carly Sgueo, our manager of adoptions, went head to head for the hula hooping championship. Below you can catch a peek at their dual and witness the winner’s victory strut. I literally could watch this once a day and never grow tired of seeing it. If this doesn’t make you laugh out loud, nothing will.

The evening of fun planned by our aptly named Committee of Fun was an opportunity for our Richmond SPCA team to come together outside the shelter to relax and enjoy each other’s company. It’s an annual occasion to briefly steal our attention away from the daily pressures of our important work…and maybe hurl ourselves down a Slip ‘n Slide or toss a water balloon or two!

New Year's Eve Games for Pet Lovers

…for those of us who prefer to spend December 31st at home with our best friend ever!

Grab a handful of hot dog pieces or tuna treats. Show them to your pet and run down the hall. When your pet gets to you, “Hooray!” drop a piece on the floor and run to another room. Repeat until you’re out of breath.

Start howling. If your dog joins you, see who can howl louder. Don’t worry. It’s New Year’s Eve. Your neighbors won’t mind. ; )

Get about 10 wadded sticky notes for your cat, or 10 tennis balls for your dog. Throw them all up in the air and bat them around the room until your both exhausted.

Say “Ready, Set, Go!!” Toss a piece of hot dog or a tuna treat down the hall and race your pet to see who gets there first.

Hold a hula hoop upright on the ground in front of your pet. Toss a treat on the side opposite your pet and let her walk through the hoop to get it. Repeat, raising the hoop an inch every 3rd time she passes through. Note: This also works with a broom stick on a stack of books. Start with one book on each side.

Lay down on the sofa together and see who can sleep the longest.

At midnight make sure to thank your pet for the joy she’s brought you all year long.  It’s way safer than driving drunk.
