Alumni feature: On a whim, Marine meets her perfect canine match

Editor's note: Today's guest blogger is Elizabeth Dobbins, who shares her adoption story. 

I went to the Richmond SPCA on a whim, a week after my 24th birthday, in July 2011. I was a Marine Corps officer living alone, and I went to the Richmond SPCA to adopt a laid-back companion. I left work and drove straight to the Richmond SPCA, arriving one hour before closing time. Dottie (then "Lilith") was classified as a "Couch Potato," and she was the only dog who didn't leave her dog bed to come to the front of her enclosure when I walked through. After spending some time with her, I decided to adopt her that day.

Ever since that day, Dottie has been a friend, a reliever of stress and a snuggle buddy. She is truly happiest when she just gets to nap in my bed all day or sit next to me on the couch while I read. She is very quiet, and at times seems thoughtful. She has traveled all over the East Coast in the passenger seat of my car, and she understands when I have to work late (as long as we go for a long walk when I get home). Although she loves to go to the dog park and play with other dogs, she seems happiest just hanging out with me at home, as we both enjoy a peaceful environment. I can't imagine life without her.
