Editor's note: PETCO's National Pet Food Drive began Oct. 30 and continues through Nov. 12. All pet food donated in Richmond-area stores benefits our Pet Pantry and helps pets remain with their families and be well fed even during times of financial hardship. Today's guest blog is by Anita Zacher, general manager of PETCO store 1882 in Midlothian.
About 2 years ago a friend of mine fell on hard financial times. Her husband lost his job, her daughter and grand child had moved back in with her and she has an adult handicapped son. She also had a house full of cats and dogs and other small pets she had adopted/rescued from her neighborhood. Being the only working member of the household, my friend felt there was no way she could feed her human family and her furry family too.
The day after she told me her husband lost his job and she was considering giving up her pets, I was on my way to work and heard an interview on Lite 98. Kat Simons was talking with someone at the Richmond SPCA about the Pet Pantry. When I got to work I called my friend and told her about this program. To this day I don't know if she ever came to see you, but it did inspire me to help everyone I can who is facing that horrible decision. I can't imagine having to give my precious babies up, and it was breaking my heart to think people had to make that horrible choice.
The very day I heard the program I told my team at work about it, and we made our own collection bin. Soon the bin was full! The community was fully behind us and has continued to be very generous. The food collection bins are now a permanent fixture in every PETCO store. I want to thank the Richmond SPCA for helping those in need, PETCO for seeing the need and helping pet food banks all over the country, and I especially want to thank those in the community who keep filling the bins and helping the furry family members stay home where they belong.
