Travels with Lottie: a dog’s-eye view of the Richmond SPCA adoption center

The Richmond SPCA’s 2011-2012 Mascot, Lottie Dula, is on the move to pet-friendly places around Richmond. We’ve outfitted her with a GoPro video camera so you can see her perspective on the world.

This week Lottie is visiting the adoption center at the Richmond SPCA.

Lottie's mission as our mascot is to bring attention to homeless pets in the care of the Richmond SPCA and spread the message that adoption is the very best way to bring a new four-legged friend into your life. During the month of June, Lottie is especially dedicated to helping her feline friends because it is "Adopt a Cat Month." Starting today, all adult cat adoptions (ages 6 months and older) are discounted by 50 percent through the end of the month. 

Our friendly adoption staff will help you Meet Your Match and find just the right Feline-ality for your home and lifestyle. If your home already includes a resident feline or canine, our adoption team will evaultate the kitty you've selected to determine if he or she will play well with others. Whether a reserved "Secret Admirer," a bold "Leader of the Band" or the good company of a "Sidekick," June is the perfect time to adopt a cat!

The great value included with our normal $95 adoption fee remains the same while the fee is discounted to $47.50 for adult cats this month. Each cat available for adoption has had a spay or neuter procedure performed, has received age appropriate vaccinations and is microchipped to provide permanent identification. We also provide free behavior helpline support, and adopted pets qualify to become clients of our low-cost Clinic for Compassionate Care. Our adoption packet for each pet includes valuable coupons and special offers. Cats adopted in June will recieve a complimentary certificate from our friends at Holiday Barn Pet Resorts for a free night's stay with a free "Kitty Kuddle."

Midas of Central Virginia offering a cool car deal to benefit homeless animals

It’s almost summertime. We’re driving more. Now is a great time to think about car care. And because of the great folks at Midas of Central Virginia, great car care will also mean more lifesaving for homeless animals like Juan and Benji (pictured) who are currently awaiting homes. Midas is offering a creative way for animal lovers all across the area to help us raise money for our homeless pets and get a pretty cool deal for your car in the process.

Adoption Center News: Week of May 21-27, 2012

Following the holiday weekend, we are late bringing you this report that 51 pets were placed in loving homes last week. That's 21 dogs and 30 cats who spent Memorial Day in a home of their own. (And likely more than a few new furry faces begging at cookouts over the weekend!)

Our adoption team has set the ambitious goal of 81 adoptions in the current week. Please share, visit and encourage friends to make the Richmond SPCA their first stop when looking for their next pet. Friends' recommendations of the Richmond SPCA are the most frequent reason first-time visitors cite for coming to our Robins-Starr Humane Center. 

Off-site adoption events: 
Saturday, June 2, our Tail Wag'N will be at the Ashland Strawberry Faire on the campus of Randolph-Macon College from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Sunday, June 3, you can visit with and adopt pets aboard the Tail Wag'N during Broad Appetit. This event takes place between the 100-300 blocks of Broad Street in Richmond, between Monroe and Adams Streets. 

Adoption special:
We've reduced the adoption fee for select cats at our center to $25. Look for the bright pink signs througout our adoption center or ask an adoption counselor for more information. As always, each adopted pet is already spayed or neutered, up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations and microchipped. 

"Adopt a Cat Month" begins this Friday, June 1. Our adoption fee for all adult cats, ages 6 months and older, will be reduced by 50 percent for the entire month of June.

Adoption Center News: Week of May 14-20, 2012

While we were three adoptions shy of last week's goal, the 49 pets – 20 cats and 29 dogs – who are starting the week in new, loving homes surely count it as a successful week of lifesaving. Our adoption goal for the week ahead is to find homes for 76 pets. For each pet placed in a home through adopiton, our admissions team is also hard at work transferring homeless dogs and cats to our facility from government pounds and shelters throughout the Metro Richmond area. When you adopt a pet from the Robins-Starr Humane Center, it's like saving two lives because it gives us space to help another animal in great need. 

Off-site adoption event: 
This Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, our Tail Wag'N will be at Cooper Vineyards for Lucy's Weekend. The event is named for Lucy, a hound mix who was found on a lonely country road, terribly injured and in need of a home. She brought many years of joy to her guardian Jacque Hogge, co-owner of Cooper Vineyards, which continues to host Lucy's Weekend in her honor. This fun weekend of events benefits and celebrates animals just like Lucy. Lawn chairs, picnics and leashed pets are welcome.

Lottie is visiting the Richmond SPCA’s Lora Robins Gift Shop. It’s her favorite place to get new toys and yummy training treats because she knows that when her mom shops here, the purchase benefits homeless pets in our care. Lottie was once a homeless dog, whom we rescued from a puppy mill in 2007, and it’s her mission to help other dogs experience the unconditional love she has known since her adoption.

Ineptitude widespread in City administration, takes toll on animal lives

Smokey was one of 34 pets we transferred into our care from Richmond Animal Control last week.

The front page article in the Richmond Times Dispatch on Sunday was about the rampant problems, screw-ups, irresponsible management and lack of integrity and accountability in the current City administration which has been overseen for the past three years by Mayor Dwight Jones and Chief Administrative Officer Byron Marshall. The latter individual sought to characterize the failures of the administration as “stumbles” but not “falls.” Well. Call me crazy but I expect our City to be managed by people who walk and perhaps even run to earn the paycheck we provide them. Stumbling and falling should earn you a ticket out of town. Mayor Jones relied on that worn old saw of suggesting that they had inherited problems from the prior administration. Similarly, Marshall said that the City organization he inherited was “broken” – wonder what you would call the current situation exactly? And, Council President Kathy Graziano said this about the instances of overtime fraud, abuses requiring the closing of the juvenile detention center and massive problems with tax billings: “Do I have confidence that they can be fixed? I have hope that they can be fixed." I suppose that is an artful way of saying that she does not have any confidence. Neither do we.

The massive problems and egregious shortcomings of this Mayor’s administration that were reported in the newspaper Sunday, and many times before then, are utterly consistent with our own experiences in trying to deal with this City administration. After nearly two years of trying in vain to get the City to enter into a partnership agreement with us, one that had been authorized by City Council and had a history of improving the City’s live release rate for homeless animals with each passing year, we finally gave up the effort only to later see Marshall go before Council and report to them that the partnership agreement had in fact been finalized with the Richmond SPCA! When I went to Council to set the record straight, the Council members indicated that they were concerned (as well they should be) that they had not been given accurate information. I am aware that at least one member of Council asked Marshall for an explanation, and as best I have been able to find out, no explanation has ever been provided. Nor has there been any effort whatsoever by the administration to reach out to us and mend the fences that their hostile attitude and callous indifference has created.

Our Board has come to the reasonable conclusion that, until an experienced professional who is dedicated to progressive life saving principles is hired to head up Richmond Animal Care and Control and until we have some indication that the City administration actually wants to partner in a sincere way with us to save animal lives, there is no point in pursuing or agreeing to a partnership that is nothing but a façade. At a minimum, I had hoped that we would see some effort on the part of the members of City Council to require a reasonable explanation for the untruthful information that they were given and for the failure of the administration to finalize in good faith with us a partnership agreement that the Council had authorized. No such effort has been forthcoming so far.

The current state of this City is a sad thing. The ones who are really paying for this situation are those who are the most vulnerable and voiceless. That, of course, includes homeless animals in the City shelter whose lives depend on someone with the City administration caring about them. In 2011, according to records provided by the City to the State Veterinarian’s Office, the life saving results for the City shelter declined for the first time in many years. They took in fewer dogs than in the past but more of them lost their lives. I certainly cannot promise that we can do much to change the course of this City but I can promise this: We will not be silent.

Clinic for Compassionate Care client expresses gratitude for saving her pet's life

Editor's note: Our Director of Veterinary Services received the letter below from a client of our Clinic for Compassionate Care who has kindly allowed us to share her story of gratitude. 

Dear Dr. Ivey:

I would like to thank you for your kind and capable care of my cat, Boots. Several weeks ago, Boots was extremely sick from a widespread infection, and I was concerned that he would have to be euthanized as a result of his illness. I had adopted Boots from the Richmond SPCA 8 years ago, and his need for urgent attention came at a time when I was faced with other pressing financial obligations and could not afford to pay the high cost of [private practice] veterinary care. I called your facility looking for information on local facilities that might provide euthanization services at reduced cost. What I found was more than I could have ever hoped for.

The associate who took my call listened while I described my situation, and she explained that your facility now offers full-service veterinary appointments for qualified patients. She took my information and asked me to hold so she could discuss my case with the veterinarian on duty. She came back to the line and told me that you would be willing to see Boots the next morning to evaluate his condition, and that the fee for our visit would be nominal.

When we arrived the next morning, I was distraught because I knew that Boots needed serious medical attention, and I was not in a position to spend a large amount of money. The staff at your clinic was very kind, and they reassured me that we were in the right place. I cannot express in writing how much I appreciate the compassion and expertise that you shared with us that day. I was grateful that afternoon to be nursing Boots back to health instead of burying him.

The entire cost of Boots’ treatment, including extensive testing and necessary medication, was less than what my local vet had quoted me for euthanization alone. And, most important, Boots is once again a healthy member of my family. You not only saved his life, you spared my children the grief of losing one of their pets too early.

I will happily recommend the Richmond SPCA and the Clinic For Compassionate Care to anyone I know who is considering pet adoption in the Greater Richmond area. The service you provide is invaluable; and I am grateful for the opportunity to have become a client.

Adoption Center News: Week of May 7-13, 2012

While we did not meet our adoption goal last week, we are happy to report that 47 pets – 29 dogs and 18 cats – were united with loving homes. That's great work by all of our adoption team members who help homeless pets in our care meet their match and also take great joy in helping visitors to our center find just the right pet who will be a good fit for their personality and lifestyle. If you haven't yet taken our interactive Meet Your Match survey, now's a great time to take this first step toward finding your soul mate! 

This week, our adoption goal is to place 52 pets. Help save lives by visiting our Robins-Starr Humane Center to adopt or by being an ambassador for adoption and spreading the word to friends and family about the wonderful pets here in need of permanent homes.

Wrap up your week with Fridays on the Patio this Friday, May 18 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Our Tail Wag'N will be on site at James River Cellars at 11008 Washington Highway in Glen Allen for this pet-friendly night that includes live music, light food, wine tasting and good cheer.

On Saturday, May 19, the Tail Wag'N visits the Shops at Willow Lawn for Imagination Richmond from 10 am. to noon. Stop by to meet the dogs and cats on board our adoption vehicle and take home your new friend the same day. 

One of our adoptable dogs will also participate in the History Hounds walking tour of Hollywood Cemetery. Take your own dog along on this tour presented by the Valentine Richmond History Center on Saturday May 19 from 10 a.m. to noon.

With 2012 Outstanding Women Awards, YWCA acknowledges cause of animal welfare

On Friday, May 4, Richmond SPCA Chief Executive Officer Robin Robertson Starr was recognized by the YWCA with a 2012 Outstanding Woman Award. Each recipient addressed the crowd at the luncheon to celebrate the accomplishments of the nine honorees. Robin has been honored in the communications category for her work to revolutionize the approaches to and attitudes about animal welfare issues in our own community and nationally as a leader of the no-kill movement. 

We wanted to share her remarks with our readers and take another opportunity to thank the YWCA for courageously acknowledging that the cause of animal welfare matters.

Adoption Center News: Week of April 30 - May 6, 2012

It's a great new week for the 38 pets – 24 dogs and 14 cats – who are greeting this day in their new homes with loving adoptive families. Thanks to our great team of staff and volunteers and to our online supporters who encourage adoption through social media. One special senior cat, Helen, found her home because she was posted and shared on Facebook! Please continue sharing photos and your own stories of adoption. This week we are aiming to send 62 pets to new homes.

Be Kind to Animals
Our "Be Kind to Animal Week" special continues through Friday, May 11. During this week, all adoption fees are reduced by 15 percent.

Offsite adoptions: This Saturday, May 12, our Tail Wag'N will be at "Paws on the Pitch," the Richmond Kickers annual pet-friendly game. Plan to join us at the stadium at 3201 Maplewood Avenue along with your four-legged friends! Tickets purchased with this link are only $7 and a portion of proceeds will benefit pets in our care. Kitten Nursery: If you've longed to help save lives by fostering infant kittens but your work schedule has kept you from getting involved, our new Kitten Nursery could be the solution. Through this new program, the Richmond SPCA will provide daytime care for infant kittens, allowing foster charges to be dropped off at our Robins-Starr Humane Center where they will be cared for by trained volunteers between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each week day. Read more about this exciting new program and sign up for a foster care orientation to get started!

Adoption Center News: Week of April 23-29, 2012

Although we did not reach our adoption goal last week, it is a great success that our adoption team placed 46 pets – 35 dogs and 11 cats – in loving new homes. Our goal this week is an ambitious 74 adoptions. If you are considering adding a new pet to your family, we hope you will plan a visit to our Robins-Starr Humane Center. The pets available for adoption are constantly changing, and you will find many new, eager faces of dogs and cats to greet you, along with the friendly, knowledgable adoption team who will help you Meet Your Match.

Be Kind to Animals
Saturday, May 5 through Friday, May 11 is "Be Kind to Animal Week." During this week, all adoption fees will be reduced by 15 percent.

Kittens are Coming: Like most expecting the arrival of a little bundle of joy, the Richmond SPCA has registered for items needed to care for the little ones. The difference? Our newborns are kittens, and last year we placed more than 1,200 into foster care. Help us prepare! 

If you would like to help with kitten season but foster care isn't a good fit, you can still help. Donated items from our registry can be brought to our center during regular business hours. Along with purchasing supplies, you can help spread the message. Please commit to sharing the registry list with at least 10 friends.
